Christmas Learning Visits

Available Wednesday to Friday from 25 November, our Victorian Christmas School Visits offer a festive twist on New Lanark's popular learning programme.

Set within our UNESCO World Heritage Site, these immersive experiences combine hands-on learning, Victorian Christmas traditions and heritage discovery, giving pupils a memorable insight into how Christmas was celebrated in the Victorian era while bringing Scotland's history to life.

What Pupils Will Experience

During their visit, pupils will:

Step Back into a Victorian Classroom: Experience school life in the 1820s with an interactive Victorian classroom session. Using traditional slates, pupils will practise handwriting, take part in a marching drill and discover how learning has changed over time. They will also explore Victorian Christmas customs and learn how many festive traditions we enjoy today began during this period.
Enjoy the Spirit of Christmas Ride: Take a magical journey through the historic village on the Spirit of Christmas Ride, the festive version of our popular Annie McLeod Experience. Guided by Holly the Christmas Fairy, pupils will discover Christmas surprises around every corner.
Discover the Story of New Lanark: Through engaging, curriculum-linked activities, pupils will learn about the people who lived and worked in New Lanark and gain a deeper understanding of Scotland's industrial heritage.
Join a Festive Sing-Along: Round off the day with a seasonal Christmas sing-along, bringing everyone together for a fun and memorable finale.

Single Activity: Victorian Christmas Classroom & Traditions

This festive experience combines traditional Victorian classroom activities with Christmas customs and hands-on learning.

Activities include:

Victorian marching drill

Handwriting lesson using traditional slates

Geography lesson

The story of the Christmas tree and decorating the classroom tree

The history of Christmas stockings and creating a felt stocking decoration

Exploring the origins of Christmas pudding through a themed arithmetic activity

Festive Christmas sing-along

The Spirit of Christmas Ride

Double Activity: Victorian Christmas Classroom, Traditions & Guided Village Tour

The Double Activity option includes everything in the Single Activity package, plus a guided tour of New Lanark.

Led by our knowledgeable guides and costumed volunteers, pupils will explore the historic village and discover what daily life was like for the mill workers and families who lived here. Along the way, they will uncover stories of work, education and community while supporting key curriculum learning outcomes.

Information We Need

Payment preference – Payment can be made by card, cheque, or cash on the day of your visit. Or by BACS or Invoice following your visit. Please note these payment terms apply only to UK Nursery’s, Primary, and Secondary Schools (if you are not one of the listed groups here, please see our Group Visits page to organise your visit).
Teachers can arrange a free advance visit. This is particularly recommended for groups with special educational needs.
Once your booking has been made, we will send you a booking confirmation. Please present this (in print or digital form) when you arrive at New Lanark.
