Here at New Lanark World Heritage Site we have a fantastic team of volunteers of all ages and backgrounds.

Anyone can join the volunteer team and there are a wide variety of areas in which you can help out. For all roles, time commitment is flexible and full training is provided. Our current volunteer opportunities are listed here however, if you feel you can support us in another way, please get in touch.

    Volunteer Roles

    Event Volunteers

    Events Volunteers will join an enthusiastic and diverse team who support the delivery of world-class experiences at New Lanark. The purpose of this role is to assist the Heritage, Events, and Visitor Attraction Teams in setting up and staffing our events and exhibitions. Volunteers will also support by giving site information to visitors, giving them guidance and directions and communicating information about the event or exhibition in question. Events Volunteers will have the chance to develop their skills in site assistance, event work, and public engagement.

    Learning Volunteers

    Learning Volunteers will join an enthusiastic and diverse team who deliver world-class experiences at New Lanark. The purpose of this role is to assist the Heritage and Visitor Attraction Teams in engagement with local schools, children, and young people. Learning Volunteers will have the chance to develop their skills by engaging with children of all ages during their visits to New Lanark. They will assist with the logistical support of Learning groups as well as communicating the site’s history to them in an engaging and informative way. There are also opportunities for volunteers to develop their skills further by delivering tours and sessions themselves.

    Tour Volunteers

    Tour Volunteers will join an enthusiastic and diverse team who support the delivery of world-class experiences at New Lanark. The purpose of this role is to assist the Visitor Attraction and Heritage Teams in their tour guide responsibilities. Tour Volunteers will have the chance to develop their tour guide and public speaking skills while engaging with the fascinating history of New Lanark, using this as a platform to learn and develop. For those who would like, this opportunity can lead to you conducting tours of your own!

    Scran

    Scran provides educational access to digital materials representing Scotland’s material culture and history and holds many images of and relating to New Lanark. Registration and a login are required to view the images online.

    New Lanark Mills Archive at University of Glasgow Archive Services
