Our Trustees

New Lanark is governed by a board of trustees from a range of professional backgrounds.

The Board provides guidance to New Lanark Trust on a range of subjects including planning, finance, heritage and Health and Safety. The Trustees carry out their duties on a voluntary basis.

James Pow - Chair

James Pow has exceptional experience and is a specialist in the retail sector at international level.  His skills span manufacturing, supply chain, sales, marketing and branding.  He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts, the Institute of Directors and The Marketing Society.  

Commenting on his appointment, James Pow said, ‘I am excited to be taking on the role of chair at New Lanark, a place of global significance.  I look forward to leading the trust as we work to recover from the challenges of the pandemic, ensuring that we are a sustainable business, a vibrant community and one of Scotland’s premier visitor attractions.’

Ewan McCall

Ewan McCall holds an MA in History from the University of St Andrews and is a published historian with a specialism in the political and social landscape of eighteenth-century Scotland.

Currently, Ewan is the Media and Public Affairs lead for a social enterprise. Prior to this, Ewan served as the British Young Ambassador to Europe from 2017-19, a role in which he focused on international learning exchanges and the future of energy.

Jonathan Russell

Jonathan Russell is a business consultant who has worked in media, tech, manufacturing, social enterprise and tourism.

He previously worked for many years as a journalist and editor on national and regional newspapers, and latterly served in a dual role as Editor of The Herald and Editor in Chief of the Herald and Times Group. He was also Publishing Director then Commercial Managing Director for Reach Scotland, part of the UK’s largest news publishing group.

 

Helen Kendrick

Helen Kendrick is an architectural historian and author specialising in European 19th- and 20th-century architecture and design. She began her career in the heritage sector working on a major UK Art Nouveau conservation project (Charles Rennie Mackintosh’s tearooms for Kelvingrove/V&A) and has since been involved in a wide variety of Scottish architecture, heritage, and urbanism projects.
 
She is an international cruise-ship guest speaker (focusing on destination architecture), regularly delivers heritage talks to diverse audiences, has curated a range of architecture and design exhibitions, and has written, edited, or contributed to numerous books and catalogues on Scottish and European architecture.

Jonathan Morris

Jonathan Morris is an outstanding hospitality professional with 40 years’ experience working with high-profile brands in the charitable and private sectors. A hotelier by profession, Jonathan trained with the Savoy Group of Hotels and has spent his entire career working in distinguished hotels and venues. He has a strong pedigree in managing world-class heritage and Grade-listed properties and is an experienced Non-Executive Director in the charitable sector, particularly those that depend on commercial income to fund their activities. As owner and general manager of a luxury boutique hotel in Highland Perthshire, Jonathan has an excellent understanding of the Scottish hospitality sector.

Dr Chris Ford

Dr Chris Ford is passionate about our industrial heritage and its conservation. Emulating the entrepreneurial and engineering leadership of Dale, Arkwright, and Owen, Chris wishes to see New Lanark become a self-sustaining model for how we deploy our renewables-based industrial heritage for greater educational and social value.

A Chartered Town Planner, Chris has a diverse commercial and public service background, involving marketing, finance and management across a variety of sectors. His academic specialism is the spatial dimension of energy systems and energy policy. He is a planning and energy consultant, supporting developers, planning authorities and communities in the delivery of net zero.

Richard Eliott Lockhart

Richard Lockhart, 76, brings a wealth of experience to his role as a New Lanark trustee. A farmer from Cleghorn near Lanark, married with children, he is deeply rooted in the community. 

His extensive venture capital career provided a strong business foundation, enhanced by his role as Clydesdale North’s Conservative Councillor since 2017. Richard has served on South Lanarkshire Council committees, including Health, Planning, and Rural Development, and local bodies like Discover Lanark and Lanark Community Development Trust. His business expertise and community commitment make him a vital asset to New Lanark’s mission of preserving its heritage and fostering sustainable growth.

Antony Smith

Antony Smith is an experienced Director, serving in both executive and non-executive capacities. He has clear and fond memories of regularly visiting New Lanark with his two daughters when they were children, giving him an appreciation of the impact New Lanark can have on its visitors. Antony was Director of Subway in Glasgow during the COVID pandemic, ensuring the system remained safe and operational throughout, while also overseeing the introduction of a new bespoke fleet of trains to keep the project on schedule. It was during his tenure at the world’s third-oldest subway that his passion for heritage truly took hold.
 
An electrician by trade and a Chartered Engineer by profession, Antony also has experience in the telecommunications sector and a deep understanding of the energy sector, where he has held senior roles in project delivery for conventional and renewable electricity generation, as well as electricity networks.
