Innovation & Investment
New Lanark Trust has three wholly-owned trading subsidiaries that aim to make profits that are then returned to the Trust to be reinvested in New Lanark.
New Lanark Trading Ltd. operates the commercial aspects of the site, including the Visitor Centre, hydro-electricity production, yarn manufacture and ice-cream production. New Lanark Hotels Ltd. operates the hotel, self-catering cottages and youth hostel, whilst New Lanark Homes administers the rented properties within the Village.

HYDRO
Hydro-electricity is generated using the historic water-power system and a restored Boving Turbine.
The Hotel and Visitor Centre buildings are self-supplied and surplus electricity is exported to the grid. You can find out more about how the village was and is powered in the New Lanark Power Trail book which is available to purchase in the Mill shop and in the Visitor Centre.

YARN
New Lanark today has re-invented its role as the spinning centre it once was, now producing woollen yarn instead of cotton.
However we still employ traditional methods similar to those used when the site was a working cotton mill. You can find out more about our production methods and purchase our wool on the New Lanark Spinning Company website.

ICE CREAM
Award-winning, real dairy New Lanark Ice-Cream is produced on-site to a traditional recipe.
New Lanark Ice Cream is currently distributed to hotels & restaurants in Glasgow and throughout the central belt. It is also enjoyed by thousands of visitors annually who visit New Lanark, with the ice cream being sold in the Mill Café, Village Store, Wee Row Hostel and served in the New Lanark Mill Hotel. Whenever you buy a cone or tub of our Ice Cream you’re contributing to the restoration and development of the historic village within New Lanark World Heritage Site.

NL HOMES
New Lanark Homes is a Registered Scottish Charity (SC040714) which was established in 2009.
This is the company through which New Lanark Trust administers the 45 rented properties in the village of New Lanark. This accommodation is managed on a not-for-profit basis by New Lanark Homes. Rental income is reinvested into the maintenance of the properties. New Lanark has a resident population of around 130 people living in 45 rented properties and 20 privately owned houses, as well as a vibrant mixture of businesses based in the historic mill buildings.
