Daily Guided Tours

Discover the fascinating 'Story of New Lanark' with our new series of guided tours which run twice daily and historic roleplay sessions. Find out about the key historical milestones on the village’s timeline that helped shape it into the UNESCO World Heritage Site it is today!

  • All sessions are included in the Visitor Attraction ticket price. You can book Visitor Attraction tickets online here or pay at our reception desk. 
  • Tours and sessions begin at 10:30 am and run until 4:00 pm.
  • There is a limited capacity per tour. Places must be booked at our Visitor Attraction Reception Desk.
  • Tours will last around 45 minutes.
  • Wheelchairs are available to be booked at the Institute reception. Visitors with mobility issues with be accommodated on all tours and sessions.
     
  • Summer Tour Schedule
    Tour schedule will change after September 1st 2018 please check for updates to follow.
  • Toys From the Past - 10:30 - 11:15, will be delivered in costume in the historic classroom in Robert Owen's school (capacity 20)
  • Guided Daily Tour - 11:30 - 12:30, leaves from Institute reception (capacity 30)
  • Guided Historic Toys - 13:00 - 13:45, will be delivered in costume in the historic classroom in Robert Owen's school
  • Historic Roleplay - 14:00 - 14:45, will be delivered in costume in the historic classroom in Robert Owen's school (capacity 25)
  • Guided Daily Tour - 15:00 - 16:00, will leave as normal from the Institute Reception

 Visitors who don’t have time to visit the whole Visitor Attraction, or have visited before can still have a chance to discover more about the history of the village by paying £5 to join one of the tours (this is paid at reception).

Tour themes include one general and one with a more in-depth look at one of a range of subjects. These are:

The Story of New Lanark:
Explore the history of New Lanark from its inception to the present day operation. Who owned the mills? How many people worked here? How did the mills operate? Discover the answer to these questions and more as our guides tells the story of New Lanark and the people who lived and worked here for almost 200 years.

Historic Roleplay:
Go back to 1825 and back to school with our Historic Classroom Roleplay! Our costumed guides will transport you back in time to the Georgian era where you will be invited to dance, learn and enjoy the atmosphere in our Historic Classroom within Robert Owen’s School for Children.

Toys From the Past:
Come and play with our historic toys in Robert Owens’s School for children. From a game of peevers to a Gird and Cleek! Find out how all these weird and wonderful toys were played with in the past, fun to be had for all the family..

The Story of New Lanark Presentation:
If your group is less mobile we offer the 'Story of New Lanark' tour in a seated, presentation format in our School for Children Theatre. If you have an enquiry about booking a Story of New Lanark Presentation please contact us on trust@newlanark.org or call 01555 661345.
 

External Talks

We are also able to offer the Story of New Lanark Presentation externally to groups. The cost of this is £50 plus travel expenses for delivery from one of our Visitor Attraction staff. 

The cost of a specialist talk by a member of the management staff the cost of this is £100 plus travel expenses.
