The Quaker Tapestry

Tuesday 11th - Friday 28th August 2015, New Lanark Institute. 10am-5pm. Free entry!

The Quaker Tapestry

Some of Robert Owen’s partners were Quakers and in a perfect link, we are delighted to be displaying the Quaker Tapestry this summer. The tapestry tells of Quaker events and insights and is a celebration of the significant contribution these quiet, non-conformists have made to the modern world. Over 4,000 men, women and children in 15 countries ‘had a hand’ in the creation of the panels which form the tapestry.

This summer, New Lanark will be displaying 20 panels from the Quaker Tapestry. These include:

  • Conscientious Objection
  • Oaths
  • Publishers of truth
  • Schools
  • Children and young people
  • Coalbrookdale
  • Merchants
  • Botanists
  • True health
  • Industrial welfare
  • John Bellers
  • Elizabeth Fry and the patchwork quilts
  • Adult schools
  • William Allen
  • George Fox in Derby gaol
  • Friends Ambulance Unit
  • Penn and Pennsylvania
  • Nantucket and Milford Haven
  • Peace embassies

We will also be hosting a talk linked to the tapestry on Friday 28th August. Tapestry curator Bridget Guest will be discussing her experiences of working on the tapestry and inspiring groups throughout the country to create their own textile projects. Tickets for the talk are £4 and can be purchased by calling 01555 661345, emailing trust@newlanark.org or online. Tickets include a glass of wine/refreshment and the chance to explore the Quaker Tapestry exhibition . The talk is located in the Institute building, doors open at 6.30pm and the talk begins at 7.30pm.
