Date: 1st June - 1st December
Location: Saving New Lanark Room, Robert Owen's School for Children
Paid / Free: Entry with a New Lanark Visitor Centre Ticket
Robert Owen: A new View of Society 200 Years On is an exhibition celebrating the bi-centenary of the publication of 'A New View of Society', Robert Owen's seminal text on the formation of human character.
Central to the exhibition is a portrait of Robert Owen by Mary Ann Knight, on loan from the Scottish National Portrait Gallery. The portrait is New Lanark Trust's first ever loan from a national institution and is particularly special as it is one of the few portraits that show Owen as a young man.
Other items being exhibited will include original extracts from ‘A New View of Society’ as well as historical documents, artefacts and paintings relating to Owen’s ideas on the creation of a better society.
CAVLP ANCIENT TREE HUNT
Date: Monday 24th and Tuesday 25th June 2013
Location: New Lanark World Heritage Site
Help the Clyde and Avon Valley Landscape Partnership discover the ancient trees of New Lanark. The Ancient Tree Hunt (www.ancient-tree-hunt.org.uk) is an online database, which aims to record all the ancient and special trees in the United Kingdom so we can protect and care for them.
Old, gnarled trees provide us with a connection through time to past
landscapes; while today they provide a safe haven for lichens, insects
and other fantastic wildlife. We think that many of the trees at New
Lanark are special and should be recorded - come along and help us.
Monday 24th June - 10am to 3pm: Research day
Discover how to use historical records and old maps of New Lanark in the New Lanark Trust’s Search Room, to help identify potential locations of ancient trees in the area. In the afternoon if we have time we will hunt for trees in the New Lanark Woodlands.
Tuesday 25th June – 10am to 3pm: Survey Day
Once our research has narrowed down the search, we will go tree hunting in the
Scottish Wildlife Trust’s Falls of Clyde Nature Reserve.
Please contact Sarah Sall (sarah.sall@clydeandavonvalley.com) for more
